Licenses & Use

The digital copies in our eMuseum are generally available for non-commercial use under certain conditions. You may use the available images for research, education, and private purposes in compliance with the respective license terms.

Notes on the Use of Digital Copies

The legal conditions for the use of a digital copy can usually be found directly next to the object.

In the full-screen view (which you open by clicking on an image), you can often find the specific rights information behind the Info-Button ("i").

1. Digital Copies with Creative Commons Licenses (CC)

Many of our images are marked with a Creative Commons license (CC). These licenses facilitate non-commercial use and clearly define what is permitted.

Example Notice:

CC BY-NC-SA Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT / [Name of the Photographer]

This notice means:

  • BY (Attribution): You must credit the creators and the source.
  • NC (Non-Commercial): Use is permitted for non-commercial purposes only.
  • SA (Share Alike): Adapted material must be shared under the same license.

Your Obligation (Source Credit): As a source credit, we require the attribution of the creators and the source in the following, abbreviated form:

Museum of the University of Tübingen MUT / [Name of the Photographer]

Important: By using and maintaining this source credit, you automatically accept the terms of the associated license.

2. Digital Copies without a Specific CC Notice

If an image does not bear a specific CC notice or another clear rights notice, the statutory copyright laws must generally be observed.

This means:

  • For works whose authors are still protected by copyright: Any use that exceeds the legal scope (e.g., publication, reproduction) requires written permission from the Museum of the University of Tübingen (MUT). This applies in particular to commercial use.
  • For public domain works: The copyright of the original work has expired. Important: Even if the original work is in the public domain, the rights to the digital copy (the photograph of the work) may belong to the Museum.

Your Obligation: In case of uncertainty or for planned publications (especially commercial), please contact the MUT directly.
